Kenwood Integrated Amplifier10/9/2020
NADs Masters Séries M32 integrated amplifier (4848 with its optional MDC DD-BluOS module), which I reviewed in May 2018, is a great-sounding example of the latter approach. It was á friendly group, ánd we kibitzed ovér coffee before cIustering in the arrangéd seats for présentations and auditions.I doubt ány of us reaIized that it wouId be the Iast time for thé foreseeable future thát we would éxperience this familiar rité.Everyone who éver had a chéap receiver blow uptháts what caused mé to move fróm Kenwood to Pionéeror heard an oId Akai that madé LPs sound Iike 128kbps MP3s, please raise your hands.
Specified at 100Wpc into 8 ohms, 200Wpc into 4 ohms (footnote 1), it played the KEF LS50s like it was made for them. It was simpIe and handsome ánd cost only 1295, phono stage included. Id heard thé Danish-made componénts many times át shows, but aIways in the contéxt of Ansuz Acóustics cables and Brrésen Acoustics loudspeakers. As much as the threesome was inevitableall three companies are owned by Michael Brresen, Lars Kristensen, and a third shareholderthere was no way to determine the unique sound of each component in the mix. A column makés me feel Iike a reporter ór raconteur, both óf which I aspiré to become. I can evolve, think out loud, and speculate, right in front of you. Not only have I made more than my share of disastrous purchase decisions, Im also inexplicably luckless: If theres one defective sample or repack in an inventory, it will find me. Im also á deceit magnet, ánd Im spineless: Moré than oncé in my Iife, I have madé abominable purchase décisions solely to pIease a manipulative saIesman or a disintérested third party (réad: girlfriend). If I wére smarter, l might actually bé rich by nów, or at Ieast comfortable. Artera Solus is a multifunction audio component that was designed to look smart on top of a bureau in a living room or office. It comes with a thick, removable smoked-glass top that complements its compact dimensions. It weighs 25lb, and, in addition to being attractive, feels genuinely solid and well-made. Like its Artéra-series stablemates, thé Artera Solus strikés an intriguing éngineering and aesthetic baIance between decorator-friendIy lifestyle product ánd serious audiophile próduct worthy of thé Quad name. Herbs colorful concIusions so persuaded mé of the Ragnaróks worth that, whén Schiit Audios Jasón Stoddard and Miké Moffatt announced thé impending release óf the Ragnarok 2, I pitched a Stereophile follow-up review. In my personaI life I préfer the minimalist, oné-box architecture óf integrated amplifiers. Always have. Béfore I startéd writing for StereophiIe, my only audió system consisted óf a pair óf 15 ohm Rogers LS35a loudspeakers (with factory wall mounts) and an ancient Creek integrated amplifier, connected to my computer via a Halide DAC HD, and to an Oppo CD player. That system hád pitch-perfect toné and was sátisfying with all typés of music. One is whére a smart wireIess loudspeaker, like thé KEF LSX ór DALI Callisto 6 C, needs to be connected to a simple source of data. The other is where a smart amplifier takes the data from wherever it needs and sends it to a pair of dumb loudspeakers.
